New in Town

philly
I spent my New Year's celebration in Philly. After my last visit I knew I wanted to go back as soon as possible to spend more time with Kim, her boyfriend Brian, and all the goodness Philly has to offer.

It was an amazing time as can be expected when surrounded by so many kind people. I would have never pictured myself feeling this comfortable with people who are still relatively "new" additions to my life. Technically this last visit was only my fourth time being with Kim in person. The same can be said for a city I've only visited a handful of times. I definitely don't know my way around the city but it feels quite close to home there. Maybe it's because it's still a northern city, or that we have the same weather, or that the mindset of the city is fairly similar to where I am now. It's probably a combination of all those things.

I think that good people can make any place feel like home. Even though I don't know much about Philly, I could see myself there for a few different reasons. All the places we visited had this welcoming, relaxed vibe and the streets were full of nooks and crannies to explore. In a lot of ways it reminded me of London. Not in every way of course, but enough. There were the uneven sidewalks and hidden streets I used to love to get lost on, and Philly had a distinct old world neighborhood feeling to it. Despite not being on top of the ocean, I could see it being a city I end up spending a lot more time in.

It was nice to feel like I was escaping even though the city is only a few hours drive away. I drive almost the same amount of time when I go home to my parents for the weekend, so taking that time to travel to a whole new city is an even better idea. New people, new conversations, new things to learn, be surrounded by and be interested in.

It could be that I like Philly so much because it's not my city. It is new and shiny and fresh and different. It could be those simple aspects that make it seems like such an amazing city to me. What I know for now is that I had a wonderful time in a place where I was surrounded by inspiring and engaging people. And even though my trip is freshly over, I can't wait to go back again. There's still so much about the people and places of Philly that I have yet to explore. Do you feel like you escape your reality when you visit a new city?

Kim and I took these pictures our first night out in Philly. I wore my new scarf from Yarn Over Movement. It's so soft, easy to wear, and definitely unique. It was hard not to wear everyday I was in town. I also wore my custom Clyde's Rebirth harness. I wore it three very different ways over the course of the weekend. I'm a huge fan of finding pieces that are not only beautiful but also versatile. We met up with Merl later in the night she was also staying with Kim for the holiday. Later in the night Veronika of Tick Tock Vintage came to meet us out! I'm so glad we were able to meet up with her. She's so nice, genuine and I wish we would have had more time to chat! More on the day to day run down in the next post.

My boyfriend lived in Philly for a while, and we went back for a few days last year. It's wonderful. I agree with everything you say about it. I wouldn't mind moving there if it were possible.

Love your striped top! And those shoes!!

I know exactly what you mean. It's definetly been a whirl win getting to know you in such a short period of time, while still feeling like we have known eachother FOREVER. It's a truely unique community that creates these relationships between people and brings together those with similar creative passions.

You know you are ALWAYS welcome with us. And I love your effortless style and zest for life!

I realized as I read (and admired the scarf) that I've never been to Philadelphia, although I have a close blogger friend there myself. It sounds like you were having a blogger convention!

I loved Philly when I visited a year or so ago. There's just something about it - can't put my finger on it. I know I could live there, we even briefly thought of moving there. Great city.

Love the scarf!

i once rode a bus through philly and fell a little bit in love, even at a glance. it was one of the cities i thought of moving to when i thought we might be getting out of vermont for a while, and it's still on my mind!

i know. i wonder the same thing when i fall in love with a place. wonder if i love it because i am not there all the time and it's new. i get restless very easily. but i've never felt like this was my home city. i've lived here for 12 years if you count college and i've never felt that this was my place. but maybe philly is your place. i've never been, but it does sound like a great city to live in.

I totally agree with what you said about people making a place feel like home. Also Philly really seems like a great place, until I walked through a not-so great neighborhood- but then again that shouldn't phase me after living in NYC for years. It's got such a great vibe though. And I love your casual outfit, and especially those shoes!

I love exploring new cities. Especially with friends. Kim has a way about her... it's just easy and natural to love her. I can certainly understand why you would yearn to visit again. Philly definitely has an old world quality about it that not many cities have retained. I so wish it wasn't so far away.

i honestly feel that way about every city but my own. i haven't even lived where i live now THAT long but i long for a different place--a new adventure, anything. i think it's my desire to leave the midwest, though. my sister lived in philly for about 6 years and i always loved visiting--it's a great town with a great, old charm about it.

PS love your alpaca scarf--is it attached to the necklace?

I have the same feelings about Philly although I haven't been in a while. I like it, I could see moving there, it seems like a break, it's nicer that it's smaller than NYC.

Love this look! You can very well say that I came over here from Kim's blog to see what you wore in the city too! I just love Philly (and live close by) - so much good food and interesting people :)

You just can't go wrong when you start with stripes and a good pair of jeans. I love, love, love every single accessory in this look, and they look so lovely together!

I totally understand what you're saying about possibly liking Philly so much because it's not your city. My best friend just came to my new home for a week, and it made me appreciate my surroundings that much more. It's easy to become complacent about your surroundings (despite how amazing they may be), and it's nice to be reminded.

Feliz ano, Morgan!
