The Mustard Rule

mustard
On Sunday I took Lua for a walk to the end of the block. There's a trail that leads down to this beach. In the summer it can get pretty overgrown, but since the leaves are starting to fall the path was clear enough to make it down to the beach. I went pretty casual clothing wise all weekend. There wasn't really any need to get dressed up. Jeans, button downs, and this scarf were on repeat.

I stopped by Target on Friday to pick up some odds and ends and grabbed this scarf on the way out. I also wore it on Saturday while I was driving around. At some point I decided I didn't want to wear it with the ends loose anymore so I had an idea. I laid the scarf out (on my lap while I was driving) and tied the two ends together by the fringe. Voila, circle scarf. This way I'm able to wrap the scarf without worrying about it falling off my shoulder or wiping me in the face in a wind storm. I highly recommend trying this. I don't think I'll go back to wearing this scarf untied. It's just so easy to throw on and loop this way.

The mustard color was another new discovery for me. I figured an inexpensive accessory would be a good way to try out a color I'd never thought I could wear. I think people write off so many things without ever actually trying them just because they are under the impression they can't pull them off. In high school I didn't wear any green because I was told it didn't look good with my skin tone. Now, green is my top color purchase. I have no idea where I got that information from, but I blindly followed it for years.

Too often people get stuck in ruts and they limit themselves immensely. Whether that be with clothing, food, career choices, or life direction. I'm not saying that I don't find myself doing this too, because I do, I'm just talking about it and how it relates to the fact that I bought a mustard yellow scarf. I bought a mustard yellow scarf and then I wore it with a pink shirt in a denim on denim outfit. Who am I?

And who knew that I would end up quite pleased with the outfit. Completely laid back, easy, and yet also against what I'd normally do. Very subtly against, yes, but it's a start. Baby steps. Since I had tied my scarf I didn't have to worry about it flying away in the wind however my hair was a different story.

Have you done anything recently that was outside of your norm? Something that broke some imaginary rule you made for yourself?

Lua and I had a lovely walk at the beach and she of course went for a swim. If you're curious, this is what I did for the rest of the weekend.
Now onto this present weekend! I'm back at my parents and hoping for more of the same relaxing I had last weekend with less of the emotional stress. I hope you all have a great one, let's catch up next week. Ok? Ok.

I can't wait to try the circle scarf trick! Especially since it's CRAZY windy out in Brooklyn today and I've got mad errands to run. I have a mustard cardigan that I bought on a whim last year and I wear it all.the.time. Who knew? Also, love the boots!

I love your beach pictures; it makes summer last just a little bit longer....

I can relate to your posts about trying to get out of life ruts (fashion, career, friends, etc). I've been thinking about that for the past year and really testing out new boundaries with both my job, friends, and clothes. By going outside of my norm I actually starting being happier; who knew? Once you find something that makes you feel good, it's like a drug and you keep seeking it out. It's tough because you doubt yourself and who you are sometimes, but in the end you learn more about yourself than you thought you would. It's great finding other people who are going through the same stuff because it is not easy.....

Now for the style comments - I love the scarf + the boots!

SUCH a good idea to tie the ends of your scarf together to create a circle scarf - circle scarves are my new favorite thing (like you said, stay in place, don't flap all around in the wind) but I never thought of just tying my existing non-circular scarves into a circle! Amazing! ANNNND, I really love mustard, but I'm part of the club who thinks it looks awful with my skin tone (in my mind, it's reserved to pretty complexions like yours, not pale blondies like me) but maaaaybe I'll have to give it a try after your little motivational speech! I do love the color on others so much!

I love that idea about tying the ends of the scarf together. I am always adjusting my scarves. That is just brilliant. The yellow looks great on you it was the perfect complement to this outfit!

I love all shades of yellow. I feel like a lot of people are afraid of it / feel like they can't wear it. I'm all about wearing whatever colors you like, complexion be damned. It looks great on you!

I love mustard. It was actually a color in my wedding. More importantly, it looks stupendous on you... maybe you should get a matching, mustard scarf for Lua?

P.S. Your path to the beach makes me jealous.

I like how much of a pop that scarf brings to this outfit. It kind of gives it a completely different feel to it! I do know what you mean about pushing our norms, thats one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place. I felt like I was in a rut as far as what I wore went, I hardly put much thought into what I wore and felt bummish most of the time. I'm still trying to find my personal style, but I kind of like that i'm all over the place right now. Hell taking pictures of myself is a bit of a struggle because i'm generally camera shy and prefer being behind the camera!

I love mustard.. almost as much as I love ketchup. However, I also love a burnt ochre hued garment. More so because I think it compliments my hair, not so much my skin tone. Fake it they you make it right?

I can see in Lua's eyes that she misses me.. move to wisco already.

These pictures are amazing and I wish that I could be there. And really amazing idea on the scarf, I read it and thought, oh god that's perfect! I'm definitely doing that to a few of my scarfs.

I know with clothes I followed so many rules because I thought I wasn't thin enough or cute enough for certain looks. I'm now at the point where I just say screw it and do what I want. It also helps that I work in the arts, where it's always a bit more relaxed on what you should wear. But yeah those rules on colors with skin tones always get me, who says it doesn't look good?

Oh well.

way to go! Mustard is one of my favorite colors. Someday I'd love to have it as the colors of my bridesmaid dresses (yeah, i'm THAT girl). I have convinced some of my friends to try it and most have actually liked the color on them! It looks great on you too. I think any yellow looks best on darker skin, so I've always enjoyed wearing it.
