Villages and Vintage

Day II

On Saturday of Sarah and Trevor's NY visit we drove up to some nearby villages. Sarah revealed that she'd never been to a town in New England! Although I don't really consider Long Island part of New England the particular town we were visiting had a very colonial style, quaint, seaport vibe to it. I'm glad Sarah got to see that. It was so strange for me to hear that she'd never been to any of those towns when those were the trips I grew up on. To her credit, I've never really been to middle America. I went to college in Pennsylvania, and visited Colorado last year. I've said it before but my Colorado trip was the first time I'd really ever been isolated like that in the center of this country. It freaked me out. 

I kept pointing out all the farms and vineyards we were passing on our drive to Sarah and Trevor. They just laughed at me, for even considering them fields. I'm assuming Indiana has more grassland than Long Island. ha. With that, look at all the pretty water.

They ended up really liking the little towns we visited. Sarah even claimed to have found her perfect forever home that she will live in one day. Complete with the whole Barbie gang. 

We stumbled upon a lovely vintage shop right in town! There were plenty of upscale antique shops that we stuck our heads in, because I love antique shopping, but that was mostly for fun. Sarah used the vintage shop like the old dress up trunk that you had growing up. Did you have one of those? Mine had all my used dance costumes in it, and some of my mom's old clothes. Oh, the good old days. 

Sarah loves her vintage. Playing it up in a Betty Draper-esque night gown, and St. Pepper's inspired jacket. They also had a full length denim halter flare legged one piece (hanging on the door in the background). Neither of us were bold enough to try that on though. 

See that 70's fringe suede bag right there? That's mine. Well it's supposed to mine, but I didn't buy it. Big time sad face. Now I'm having serious non-buyers remorse. I want it. Wait for me!

We stopped by a beach on the way out of town. It's on this stretch of road that is flanked by water on either sides. If you look out you can see the small islands just off the beach. I'd like to picnic there one day with that little boy playing in the sand.

After walking around all day, we headed back to my house to watch the fog roll in. The boys relaxed while Sarah and I hopped on the couch with tea and ate cookies. What I wouldn't do for a friend like that to live closer. 

I didn't get outfit specific shots. Sarah tried but I was being shy for some reason and kept making ugly, really ugly, ok heinous, faces at the camera. I think I was a little unsure of the outfit after I put it together. I don't know if high waisted things work for me. Something about not having much of an upper body makes me look like a little boy instead of defining a waist. Other than that, I'm a huge fan of the shorts. I really like the pale palest pink tone, exposed zipper, and lacey detail.
I got the Grasshoppers Wedges from the Little Ocean Annie shop on Etsy. They are beyond comfortable and I'm sure will be on repeat in my summer wardrobe. In fact, they're already packed for my trip this weekend! Thanks Annie! I love them.

What do you think? What shapes work for your body type? Have you figured it out yet or are you, like me, still trying all the options? Any advice for a newbie?

We spent the night on my porch until we got the strength up to go to dinner. Travelling / having visitors is hard work! But I'm so glad they came.

Along the Scallops Edge

Phew, that post yesterday was long, ha. This will be more normal in length.

This is what I wore the first day touring around town with visitors. I figured shorts were needed for all the walking we were doing, a tank to catch some sun, and something over top because I'm always cold. Functionality is really important to me. If I'm not comfortable in what I'm wearing then why am I wearing it? Some people will say because you make sacrifices for beauty. That's fine. Sometimes I will, but not everyday. I don't want my life to be a huge heap of sacrifices and blisters. I might not be wearing 4" clunky heels hiking through the woods, but I will wear much easier to walk in very cute moccasins. I'm sure you'll be here some day when I eat my words and wear something completely ridiculous, ha, oh well.

These photos are all a bit blown out. If they're all blown out maybe it was on purpose. Yup, that's it. Hey guys look at all these super artsy photos!

I had a feeling when I came across this wooden necklace that it would become a staple piece for me. It was a practical purchase since I knew I would wear it over and over throughout the seasons. The  color palette really lends itself to most of my wardrobe and I love the feel of the wooden beads.

As far as the scalloped shorts, lets just sum it up and say I'm glad I own them. I had to run some errands before Trevor and Sarah came into town. One of the things I had to do was make some returns, which turned into exchanges in the form of these shorts. It's a good thing too. Until now I've been working with one pair of shorts. I know, ridiculous. Luckily there were a bunch of shorts I'd been eyeing on Urban Outfitters website and these were the winners. 

I tend to be more about small details than loud statements. A neutral pattern and pretty scalloped edge detail is just fine by me. Look, even a little continuation of the scalloping detail on the moccasins!...maybe.

Coastal Vacation

Day I, Part I

We walked! A lot! All over town, on cliffs, through the woods, over rocks, in sand. I dragged them everywhere the first day of their visit. Since Sarah and Trevor live in Denver and don't get to see the ocean too often I wanted to give them some of the best views I know of.

These cliffs are nothing compared to the Rockies they have. But then again, they don't have an ocean.

Couples. 

Sarah pretty much loves to laugh. She's good at it. I'm more of a quiet smiler. We discussed this on the trip. 

Over the cliffs and through the woods to the rocky beach we go. 

Lua was not well behaved, not even a little. I think she was just really excited to have new people around. She did get a lot of swimming in though. Which resulted in her being a little bit of a sick puppy later. Dogs should not drink salt water, Lua.

Break for Lunch in town. Yummy.

Part II. Walk on the beach.

After lunch, and the much needed nutrition for energy, we walked to the end of the block to take a stroll on the beach.

A little something called erosion.

Trevor went for a quick dip. Emphasis on quick. Northeast ocean in May is very very cold, which is why he was the only one of us to venture in.

We had to put the leash back on Lua so she would stay out of the water. That puppy sure loves to swim.

Part III. Sunset.

Day I was a complete success.

At the end of the day we headed to grab some drinks and watch the sunset. It was incredible. I nice way to round it all out. Trevor even said that if he wasn't already married he'd definitely marry the sunset. I think I might have gotten them hooked on coastal living. And with days like this, who wouldn't be.

Old Friendships, New Vacations

I had an amazing time with these two lovebirds this weekend! And thanks to their visit, I got to have my own little vacation too. They flew in on Thursday, I picked them up mid-work day, we headed out to Long Island, I picked up Kev at the next airport and then we headed out east! Besides the four of us and Lua being a little stuffed in my car (I tend to over pack, woops) it was a good road trip to get the weekend warmed up.

I met Sarah 5 years ago. We were both headed to London for our semester abroad and she sat in front of me on the plane ride over. I still remember the waffle shirt with cute flowers she wore on the flight. I can't believe we're still friends. We were in and out of touch over the years as our lives took different turns. When Kev and I went out to Denver last year I reconnected with Sarah and met her husband Trevor for the first time! We've been in touch ever since and have seriously bonded over the blog world. She was the one who helped me start my own. We're also writing buddies of sorts now, sending creative writing back and forth across the country. It was so nice to hang out with her in real life and spend some time getting to know Trevor better, even though we gchat all the time, ha. They are such a great couple and so much fun to be around. 

And how cute is Sarah on her travel day?! Wedges, and a vintage hat box as a carry on. I could never.

I'll be posting about the trip throughout the week, we did so many fun things there's no way I could fit it into one post!
