Scenes from a Weekend : IX

wknd
I stayed in NYC this past weekend. After a lot of traveling around it was refreshing not to pack up and drive somewhere. I usually try to get out of the city on weekends, so it was nice to change it up and actually play the part of someone who lives here full time, like I do.

On Saturday I met up with Melissa to attempt to finish Christmas shopping. The streets were packed with last minute shoppers and wanderers. I managed to pick up a few things, although it was more like getting things I needed than grabbing gifts for family. I'm not very good at shopping unless I know exactly what I want and where to get it before hand. Otherwise I just say "never mind" and roam aimlessly.

Sunday I treated myself to a long breakfast date. A scone and a latte at a nearby bake shop fit the bill. I forgot how strong their coffee was and had some serious shakes by the time I left. I spent the rest of the day doing errands in the sunshine, which is another novelty for me. Since I'm usually out of the city on weekends I end up doing most of my errands after work in the pitch black and freezing cold. I often forget what it feels like to really live somewhere. Casual breakfast, doing errands, grocery shopping, street roaming and all. It's kind of nice.

I've lived in this apartment for almost two years. It's hard to believe that. When I moved in I thought I'd be gone in six months. To where? Who knows. I just thought I'd move again. This is the longest I've lived in one place since high school. Even in college I moved into a new place every year. It's strange because this apartment is still not decorated at all. It feels so temporary. I don't want to spend the money and put the effort into decorating it and end up having to get rid of things that don't fit in the next place (wherever that may be)

I really do like my apartment though. It's tiny, but it's comfortable. And I'm beginning to enjoy my city again. It's finally starting to feel familiar as I settle into my new weekend routine of someone who actually lives in Manhattan. Last minute meet ups with friends, long aimless walks, checking off to do lists. Just the small things that make it so apparent to me how much I've been missing out by not taking advantage of the city I live in. It was a good way to help me prepare for all the holiday traveling that's right around the corner. Then again, I can't wait for that either.

Yesterday (Monday) Lua got really sick. I'll spare you the details, but I ended up having to leave to work early to drive to the vets over an hour away. After waiting an hour plus Lua finally got to see the vet. He decided they had to take x-rays and run some blood tests so I had to leave her there for a few hours. Everything ended up being fine, I'm just waiting for a few more test results later in the week. I had to stay at my parents because it was very late by the time I was able to pick her up. I'm so happy that she's ok, but also really happy that I had the money mid-Christmas season to pay her hefty vet bill (those of you thinking about getting a pet that's a big thing to consider!). Part of me thinks she's just tired of living somewhere without a backyard. I'll have to look for that at the next place I live.

When I lived in Texas, I swore every year that I was there was going to be the last. I never decorated, never bought furniture. Until the fella moved in, I didn't even have a couch or table!
You have a wonderful talent for photography.

I'm sorry to hear that your Lua got sick! You may want to consider a pet protection plan. It's sort of like pet health insurance. I've had to use it a couple of times. Once when my dog ate soap from the bathtub in the middle of the night. I got it through Petsmart and it covers a lot of medical bills.

Anyways, your weekend sounded nice. It gave me the idea to go get myself a latte and a scone right now! hehe..

Poor Lua! You're such a good mamma to be taking care of her so well!

It's amazing how quickly time passes. I never thought I'd live somewhere for more than a year. I've always had the travel bug and feel like I'm suffocating when I stay in one place too long, but six years in Portland slipped by silently. It actually scared me when I realized it...and then I moved to Mexico - problem solved!

I'm so happy to hear that Lua is okay. And, I totally understand hefty vet bills. My cat, Marley, is epileptic and one trip (just stepping into the office, it seems) to the feline neurologist is ridiculously expensive!

Traveling, seeing pals, making memories... all good things. But so is home. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying yours again.

I"m sorry to hear about Lua but I am very happy she is ok. We've been lucky in that we haven't had to take the dogs to the vet but once a year for their check ups and boosters. But each year without fail, The Husband bitches about the bill. I try to tell him that over the course of a year it's not that much. He doesn't hear me though. :)
