Girls as friends

I spent this past weekend in Delaware with Kevin and his family. It was really nice to get out of the city and go to the beach for some fresh air again.
Friday morning I got a text from a friend at 7am saying she wanted to meet up before I left for coffee. It actually worked out perfectly because I always get coffee before I leave for my southern bound drive. I have a tendency to fall asleep while I’m driving. Anyone have any good tips on how to avoid this? I think it happens to me because when I was little I used to sleep in the car all the time. We spent a lot of time driving back and forth to the barn and I would always pass out in the back of the car. Probably has something to do with the motion. Who knows.
Anyway, I met up with one of my oldest friends and had a chance to do some real catching up.  I’ve been sort of lacking on my social appearances in New York as of late. Since I work with my family I don’t have every opportunity in the world to meet new people. All the girls and friends I hang out with here I’ve known since, forever, and you can’t exactly make new girl friends at a bar, can you.
Hey, can I buy you a drink?? Want to sit down and chat? I really like your hair? I admire your style and can we be friends?
The girl on girl connection is so tricky. You can’t exactly just go up to a girl and start a conversation unless there’s the connection or introduction of a mutual friend. And then you run the risk of pissing off the mutual friend if you two hit it off too well, and the mutual friend thinks you’re ditching her to hang out with the friend she introduced you to and it goes on and on.
So, they’re tricky. Why do we do this to ourselves? We’re good people, we have good intentions, and we’re so fussy about making new girl friends.
I’ll certainly be the first to admit that my best girl friends are my oldest friends. Somehow all the others I’ve met along the way never quite got me the same or maybe they just didn’t have the whole picture. But here’s the kicker, I want new girl friends, I want to feel that connection and understanding that happens when two girls really click.
I suppose the solution would be to remain open to it, to not try so hard to be guarded, and to truly let people in. And from there true and long lasting friendship will develop. And flowers will bloom and peace and understanding will ring out across the land!
I think the fact that I’m shy and I have an older brother didn’t help me make those connections any easier.
The long of the short is that I got coffee and a mini bagel for the drive and I talked with my friend. Phew

After loading mounds of excess baggage, laundry, food, and Lua, I hopped in my car and took off pronto.
Five short hours later I arrived in Delaware. The sun was shining and the weather was sweet. Kev’s parents, sister and grandma were already there and couldn’t wait to see Lua. They love Lua. And Bodie, their dog, loves Lua too. That’s her boyfriend.
Kev and I took the two pups for a walk to stretch my legs and snap some photos. The afternoon lighting was just right.
This outfit was deceivingly comfortable for the drive. I’ve never thought of dress pants as being comfortable before, but these were. The pants are a loose fit so there was no squeezing on my hips. I’m a big believer in t-shirts and this one is so soft.
I stole the scarf from my mom, among a few other things that will be popping up here over the next few days.

(I love how the deck looks in my sunglasses and how you can see Kev and the puppies.)

And now I must talk about the Olive Green Zodiac Buckle Boots. They’re from one of my favorite Etsy sellers, Capricious Traveler. She was having a sale a while back and I stocked up on a bunch on things I had been eyeing in her shop. I was a little hesitant about the boots at first. I wasn’t sure how I’d wear them, with what, and how they’d make my legs look (short and stubby?). I bought the pants with no intentions of wearing them with the boots but when I was packing late night Thursday something clicked and I grabbed the boots. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. A little menswear-ish.
After the walk Kev and I flopped down and relaxed. His mom’s crabcakes happened, because they usually do. They were yum. We watched Did You Hear About the Morgan’s. The only thing I can say about that movie is that it furthered my desire to get out to the Wyoming / Montana area of the country. All in all it was a successful Friday and Kev took some really great pictures. Thank you Kev!

Thanks for listening - in the reading sense. What do you all think? Are girls the hardest friends to make?
Oh, yes, and thought on the boots?

Doll. Love this post so much. I'm glad we got to chat about the girlfriend thing yesterday. I definitely have a tough time making new girlfriends--and even connecting with the ones I have. Why are we so intimidating?

As for your outfit, I already told you, but I'll tell you again. I adore those pants and I didn't realize that you went for it and bought those boots. Good thing you did. They're reeeal cute.
