My First Earrings

These are the first earrings I ever bought.
I was 20 years old and living in London. I bought them on Portobello Road before I even had my ears pierced. I love pretty much everything about them. The inset sea, sailboat, moon, and star. The colors. The fact that the sea in one is different than the sea in the other. Wonderful.
I got my ears pierced while studying abroad in London at Selfridges, a big department store that was close to where I was living at the time. Who gets their ears pierced at a department store? Apparently, I do. I took one of the new friends I had made with me to get it done. It was quick, in and out, and I was a new person. Not exactly. I was a new jewelry buyer at least.
Most of my earrings are from the different street markets around London. I was so excited I could finally buy earrings that I really stocked up while I was there. My London collection still dominates my supply, and that was over 5 years ago.
Now, I try to get earrings from all the different places I go. They're my souvenir. I can't help but think this is because of all the lovely ones I bought in London and how each pair means something so different and so special to me.
These little beauties still hold their own in my favorites. I remember the little shop you had to practically crouch to walk into, the crickity old man asking me if I wanted to buy them, and my friend cheering me on, It's ok you don't have your ears pierced yet, we'll get that done later.
I'm glad I bought them. They were too good to pass up, even for a 20 year old who still didn't have pierced ears.
Ohhhh you earrings.

Isn't it strange that even though these things are so trivial, they're just earrings, that they really do mean something to us? That we attach these very specific memories to the things we own?
Every time I see them or take them out to wear I think about that day, that moment in London, even if its just for a millisecond.  I think about it, every   single   time.
What's your favorite first? Do you still own it/them?

These are so pretty. I can't remember my first pair of earrings, but I have had them pierced since I was two. Lol.

Love those earrings... I have a few items that I bought while traveling and they always bring me back to the country I miss... I think their is no better souvenir than an article of clothing or jewelry that you wear and love.
